NOTICE TO MARINERS: URGENT STORM PREPARATION ADVISORY
ISSUED BY: East Lyme HarborMaster Office
DATE: Wednesday, September 23, 2026
SUBJECT: Mandatory Mooring Safeguards for Upcoming Nor'easter
ATTENTION ALL EAST LYME & GIANTS NECK MOORING HOLDERS:
The National Weather Service is tracking a strong coastal storm system that will bring classic Nor'easter conditions to our waters this Friday, September 25 through Saturday, September 26.
With sustained northeast winds projected at 22–24 mph and much higher gusts, Giants Neck and open areas of Niantic Bay will face severe, direct wind fetch. This long-duration blowout will create heavy surf, violent vessel motion, and a high risk of mooring failure or vessel grounding.
All mooring holders are directed to implement full storm protocols. All vessel preparations must be completed by Thursday evening, September 24.
Mandatory Mooring Safeguards:
Double Your Pennants: The relentless wind fetch—especially off Giants Neck—will place extreme, rhythmic strain on your tackle. You must double your mooring pennants.
Deploy Chafe Gear: Continuous oscillation will quickly burn through unprotected lines. Ensure heavy-duty chafe guards are securely wrapped and tied at all friction points.
Minimize Windage: Strip your vessel of all canvas, biminis, sails, and solar panels. Remove dinghies from davits. High windage is the primary cause of moorings dragging or breaking free.
Verify Bilge Pumps: Ensure your batteries are fully charged and automatic switches are operating cleanly to clear the heavy, continuous rainfall expected.
Safety & Emergency Operational Rules:
Life Safety First: Do not attempt to board, adjust, or check on your vessel during the peak of the storm on Friday or Saturday. No asset is worth risking a water survival situation.
No Last-Minute Transits: If you plan to move your vessel to a sheltered hurricane hole up the Niantic River, do so before Thursday night. High winds may prevent the Niantic River Drawbridge from operating safely.
We will continue to track the system. Please monitor Marine VHF Channel 16 and the National Weather Service New York Office for real-time marine updates.
